Shanghai East Hospital is our Medopolo internship partner in China. The comprehensive Shanghai East (also called ‘Oriental’) Hospital is affiliated to the renowned Tongji University School of Medicine and consists of 61 clinical and technical departments and offices, which integrate medical procedures, disease prevention, medical education and research together. With its more than 2800 staff members – among them over 400 senior medical and attending doctors and an excess of 2000 in-patient beds, the Shanghai East Hospital offers a superb teaching environment.
Each department consists of several wards with 20 – 40 in-patient beds each plus outpatient clinics at both locations. The hospital receives an excess of 3 million outpatients and emergency patients annually. While most patients received are domestic, international patients are increasing in numbers are currently account for over 40.000 patiens per year. International patients are also received by the English-speaking staff of the deparments of the Shanghai East International Medical Center (SEIMC).
The Oriental Hospital is especially renown for its key disciplines, namely disaster medicine, heart failure therapy, cardiac surgery, cardiovascular medicine, dental implantation and prosthodontics, minimal invasive gallstone surgery, comprehensive oncology treatment, cerebral-vessel disease treatment, anorectal surgery, and cranial tumor surgery. The staff consists of many outstanding physicians. Dr. Barry J. Marshall, the Nobel Prize Winner in 2005, has joined the team of the Shanghai East Hospital as the director of the Marhall International Diagnosis and Treatment Centre for Digestive Diseases.

The Shanghai Oriental Hospital is equipped with a state of the art radiology department and offers a 64-row spiral CT machine, Flash CT, PET-CT, 3.0 T MRI, DSA, or EDGE Radiosurgery Systems just to name a few. In addition, there are Hybrid Operation Rooms, circulatory-assist devices, LINAC, ECT and real-time 3D color ultrasound available. The hospital also provides its own laboratory, a blood bank, a pathology with own sectioning rooms, a medical library, a computer lab and a multitude of fully equipped teaching spaces.
Education and Training
The Shanghai East Hospital regularly offers clinical conferences and consiliar mentoring in all clinical departments, an antomical-pathological conference, advanced training meetings, case presentations, and discussion of the newest research results to all applicable staff and medical students. As teaching hospital of Tongji University, the Shanghai East Hospital engages in clinical teaching programs for undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral students alike. The domestic teaching staff consists of 96 doctoral tutors and 140 master tutors. In addition, the hospital is a renown standardized clinical training base for resident physicians as well. The hospital regularly offers clinical conferences and consiliar mentoring in all clinical departments, an antomical-pathological conference, advanced training meetings, case presentations, and discussion of the newest research results to all applicable staff and medical students. The Education Office of the Shanghai East Hospital, Director Yiwei Luo, is responsible for the organization of the Med’oPolo International Rotation Program for final year students (‘PJ’) and clinical student rotations (‘Famulatur’) at the Hospital.
Research
The Shanghai East Hospital has established several international scientific research platforms including the Key Laboratory of Arrhythmia of Ministry of Education, the Translational Medicine Center for Stem Cell Research of Zhangjiang, a National Stem Cell Bank, the Shanghai Heart Failure Institute, and the Shanghai Municipal Stroke Center. There are postdoctoral pportunities for clinical medicine and Biomedical Engineering. The Translational Medicine Center for Stem Cell Research has been awarded as one of the first stem cell organizations. In 2016, the Shanghai East Hospital ranked as 8th hospital in the Comprehensive Disease Treatment Index in Shanghai, the 61st hospital of Science and Technology Impact in China, and the 8th hospital of Nature Index – in 2017, the 20th in China with 61 projects winning in the National Natural Science Foundation of China.
Location of the main Campus:
The Hospitals main campus is located in Pudong Lujiazui, 150 Jimo Road, amidst the scyscrapers. In its immediate vicinity are the Jin-Mao Tower, the Shanghai World Financial Center, the Shanghai Tower and the Shanghai Stock Exchange. Near to the hospital is the subway stop “Dongchang Road“ (Line 2). The new South Campus of the Shanghai East Hospital is located in Pudong near the Sanlin World Expo site at 1800 Yuntai Road, close to the subway stop ‘West Huaxia Road’ (Line 6). The new campus features state of the art equipment and offers additional rotation placements for international students in case that all placements at the main campus are already booked.
Location of the Shanghai East Hospital South Campus
The new Southern Campus of the Shanghai East Hospital is located in Pudong at 1800 Yuntai Road, close to Metro Stop ‘West Huaxia Road’ on Metro Line 6. The new campus features state of the art equipment and offers additional rotation placements for international students.
The Shanghai East Hospital – South Campus: Upon request, our students can also choose to be placed for a medical rotation at the new South Campus.

Foreign Cooperations
In 2001, the Sino-German Heart Research Institute was established in a cooperation with the German Heart Center in Berlin (DHZB). Subsequently, the Sino-American International Hospital, the Sino- Japanese Senmao Clinic, the Sino-French Urological Surgery Center, the Sino-American East-Anderson Tumor Center, and Sino-American Emergency Research Institute have been set up one after another. Exchange of international scholars is conducted regularly. There are more than 40 medical professionals amongst the staff who have received their medical education or have worked abroad.
